Staying and Playing… At Farmer’s Daughter Hotel, LA

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

Here’s a fun fact you guys might not know about me: when I was 16, my first job was working in a fancy hotel. Seeing how the hospitality industry operated from the inside out made me appreciate the little details and the effort that goes into a running hotel. Oh, and it’s also shaped me into an official hotel nerd!

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

When we were picking a place to stay for our 4 nights in LA, we wanted somewhere with a central location, awesome style and a little bit of an edge – so Farmer’s Daughter hotel felt like the perfect choice.

I enjoyed our stay there so much, I wanted to share some details today…

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

As non-drivers we didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, so the fact that Farmer’s Daughter is within walking distance of a lot of visitor attractions made it really easy to plan our days. We were just across the road from The Grove and about ten minutes from Melrose. CBS and the trendy 3rd Street were just a hop, skip and jump away. Oh, and you could see the Hollywood sign from the hotel (it’s the little things, huh?)!

We were never stuck for something to eat, as there were tons of options across the street and the hotel’s own restaurant, TART (more on that below!) to choose from.

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

If you hadn’t already guessed from the name, the overall vibe of this boutique hotel is country bumpkin meets LA chic – think oversized gingham walls, barn-style doors and high-end products. The team are kitted out in denim shirts and you can graze on home-made potato chips in the lobby while you talk to the budgies who hang out there, chirping away.

After a couple of busy days at Disney (and even busier to come), having somewhere relaxing to come home to was super important to us. The rooms at Farmer’s Daughter are a decent size, with good use of space to create a feeling of calm (everything you need is there, but cleverly stowed away in purpose-built units so there’s not much clutter).

There are extra treats in the room, but if you decide to eat them, there’s a hefty price tag attached, so watch out for that! But the Nespresso machine, pods and toiletries are all included in the price of your stay. Plus, they serve free whisky in the lobby in the evening – so if that’s your thing, it probably all works out OK, right?

The outdoor areas of the hotel are very inviting, with a cute pool area (I mean, come ON! They have yellow rubber ducks in the pool!), fooseball and lots of outdoor courtyard seating. The warm weather could make it very easy to lose a whole evening curled up on the sofas!

The hotel also houses a very popular restaurant, TART – which specialises in seasonal comfort food, fitting in with the cosy feel of the rest of Farmer’s Daughter. We loved watching all of the LA regulars pop in for a bite to eat while enjoying a long, lazy brunch with piping hot coffee.

Overall, I would say that staying at Farmer’s Daughter gave us the opportunity to live like locals for a few days. We were able to walk outside and go about our day immediately, only really needing Uber a couple of times for the further away areas like Venice Beach and the Hollywood Hills.

The little details and overall vibe made this hotel nerd very happy! Tell me, have you ever stayed in an LA hotel? Where should I visit next?

Not Just Pretty Pictures: Coffee Table Books You Need in Your Life

We’re slipping into the time of year where I find staying at home an increasingly attractive option, despite the fact that I’m generally the type of person who prefers to be out and about. Over the last couple of years, I’ve spent a lot of time and energy creating a fun home space that I can both work and relax in – so it’s not exactly a bad thing that I want to spend more time here.

Coffee table books are a particular indulgence of mine – and Gary’s – and we’ve accumulated quite a collection since we started living together! And during the chillier, greyer Sundays, escaping into one of these big, beautiful books with a mug of something hot is one of my favourite ways to spend an hour.

Sometimes coffee table books can be all style and no substance though and, as much as I can appreciate that, I do still like to read something while I’m leafing through them!

I thought I’d share a few of my favourite titles that deliver both, in case you’re looking for something new to reach for on your next cosy day at home…

What I Love About Movies by Little White Lies is a collective celebration of films by some of the best in the business. From Ryan Gosling, to Wes Anderson, Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford Coppola and more, each answering the simple question (“What do you love about movies?”) in their own unique style alongside some gorgeous illustrations.

Did someone say Wes Anderson? The Grand Budapest Hotel by Matt Zoller Seitz is a comprehensive guide to one of Anderson’s most popular productions, filled with interviews, costume designs, research notes, a critical essay and much more. This pastel pink beauty is always sitting in our living room, ready to whisk us away to Wes’ world.

The Secret History of Twin Peaks by Mark Frost is what you might expect from a book about one of TV’s most curious cult classics: it is not what it seems. This oversized, hardback title is actually a mystery novel in the format of a coffee table book – with the reader taking on the role of an FBI agent. The pages are peppered with photographs, transcripts and other evidence to digest. A must-have for any fan of the show!

Finally, Places to Go, People to See by Kate Spade is one of my most recent additions and covers a topic close to my heart: travel! The vintage glamour of the jet-set meets inspirational quotes, travel tips (like what to buy if you ever find yourself in Buenos Aires and the BEST room service midnight snacks!) and oodles of vibrant photos. Warning: wanderlust is pretty much guaranteed with this one…

For me, these coffee table books tick all of the boxes: they look stylish when I display them around the flat, they’re filled with amazing content and have lush, eye-catching images to get lost in.

Event: Come Hang with Me at Blogging With Success!

Blogging With Success

Today I’m super excited to announce that I will be speaking at Blogging With Success – a fun evening of panel discussion, Q&A and networking – and I would love to see you there!

On 21st September, I will be teaming up with Glasgow Museums and a small squad of talented blogger babes at the beautiful Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) to share my experience of creating content online and answering questions in a lively group chat. This will be followed up with plenty of time for meeting, mingling and giving one-on-one insight (got a question that we didn’t manage to fit into the panel discussion? This is your chance to ask it!) with you guys.

If you’ve ever wanted to know more about blogging, social media or creating digital content, this relaxed, informative session will be an awesome way to get started. I’ll be joined by a diverse group of writers who cover a wide range of topics like fashion, food, lifestyle, interiors, travel, culture, arts and health (to name a few!), so we’ll each be sharing our unique take on the blogging world.

You don’t HAVE to have a blog to come along to Blogging With Success though! You might be a blogger looking to learn some new skills, or maybe you’re running a business and want to grow your online presence. You might be studying marketing at college or uni and looking at potential career options. Whatever your interest in blogging might be, everyone is welcome!
