I was having a conversation about blogging while I was at an event recently and was asked about how I come up with ideas for blog posts, and how to post varied content. It’s a question that I’ve been asked a few times now and it made me think. There’s certainly no secret to this, and whenever I’m asked about content, the answer I give is this: strive to be awesome. Having fresh and interesting things to say is what will make a blog truly stand apart from the others. Sure, a pretty header and great pictures will grab attention and certainly drive some new readers your way, but what you say and how you say it is what will always keep people coming back for more.
My love of blogging starts with the simple fact that I love to write. Finding your voice, or style of writing, might take time and lots of practice. Once you have found your style, creating strong, unique content is the next step in making sure your blog is memorable. But it’s easier said than done, right?
Here are a few of my favourite DO’s and DON’T’s when it comes to creating awesome content:
DO think about how often you want to post. The right number of posts per week for one blogger might be totally different for the next; depending on your niche. Do you feel that posting multiple times per day will still allow you to write strong posts that you can be proud of? Or does one amazing post each week suit you and your readers better? Regular and semi-regular features can help with this.
DO ask yourself “what am I PASSIONATE about?” – this will help to bring out your voice. Remember, if you don’t enjoy what you’re writing about, it will show. Your passion might be anything, from cheeseburgers to nail art! What is important is that you embrace it and show it in your writing. Take risks, and don’t be afraid to show a little personality!
DO help your readers. Does what you’re writing about help others in some way? For example, if you’re a beauty blogger, think about the product you’re reviewing and how to present your thoughts to your readers in a way that will really give them advice. Is that new moisturizer a lifesaver? Then shout it from the rooftops! DO read as often as you can. Think about what you like and dislike and apply it to your own writing. Does your favourite author have a knack for storytelling? Or maybe you read an article and didn’t like the use of certain phrases. Nobody knows it all, and we can still learn from others every day.
DON’T be hard on yourself if you end up in a rut. If the inspiration isn’t flowing like it normally would, maybe it’s a sign that it’s time to take a break. You won’t always find great ideas sitting behind your computer, so pick yourself up and do something else. Anything else. Go for a long walk or grab a coffee with a friend. You might even come across something amazing while you’re out and about that you can’t wait to write about later.
Which brings me to my next point…
DON’T forget to carry a notebook. A little bit old-school, but it comes in handy for when inspiration strikes!
DON’T follow the crowd. Be yourself, because you are fabulous and you are who your readers have come for. It can be tempting to post about a certain topic because it’s the flavour of the month and your peers are all blogging about it. If you have strong feelings for, or an interest in that topic then great! If you don’t, well…what’s the point? Never post for the sake of it or because you think you have to. You, and your readers are better than that!
I hope that these tips help whether you’re a seasoned blogger or just starting out.
Now, go get ’em, tiger!
