At this time of year, it’s dark and cold and – let’s face it – we aren’t as likely to be outside as we would have been a few months ago. I adore going to the cinema, I studied it at University and I have a deep love for all things film. Whether you are a movie addict or just a casual cinema-goer there are some awesome film events coming up over the coming weeks in Glasgow that are sure to tempt you out of your house and into one of your local theatres. Let’s have a look at some of the highlights…
All-night scares at Frightfest
Frightfest is making a screaming return to the Glasgow Film Theatre just in time for Halloween and I for one can’t wait! I attended the weekend-long event back in February this year and spent a very happy two days (and nights) watching the very best of new releases, exclusive premieres and special features along with a packed theatre of fellow horror film fanatics. It was a total blast and for one day and night only, I get to do it all again. If you love a good scare this one’s for you. Film Four’s Frightfest is on at the Glasgow Film Theatre on November 2nd and you can get more information, including ticket details over here.
IMAX Superhero Special
Glasgow’s IMAX is a treat for anyone that enjoys the total cinema experience. With a curved screen the size of a football pitch and superb digital sound it’s pretty impressive. I enjoyed a Dark Knight Rises event at the IMAX last year (with costumes highly encouraged – as all of the best events do) and a triple-bill of superhero cinema magic is one of the latest showcases. Screening tomorrow (29th October) only, the Thor/ Avengers/ Thor: The Dark World event is a must-see for fans of the Marvel franchise and a chance to watch the storyline in order, over all three films. You can find out about tickets here. Fingers crossed they do a similar event with the Iron Man films – I’ll be in a seat sharper than one of Tony Stark’s one-liners…
Nosferatu at Glasgow Grovesnor Cinema
A showing of Nosferatu in any cinema is a total delight and the good folks at Glasgow Grovesnor are putting on a one-off screening of the 1922 German masterpiece. This is not like other films – the visuals, eerie buildup and use of shadows always give me genuine chills. The screening is being brought to Glasgow this Thursday night in association with BAFTA, and you can find more information here. Book one of the comfy sofas, grab some popcorn and come see why this creepy classic was banned in Sweden until 1972!
French Film Festival UK at Glasgow Film Theatre
Ooh la la! The 21st French Film Festival UK hits Glasgow Film Theatre next month and promises a vast range of films including classics, premieres, shorts and documentaries. Plus, there are whispers of some pretty awesome guest speakers! This festival is a must for lovers of French cinema (or cinema in general) and with so many to choose from there are no excuses to pop over for a screening. My pick? It’s VERY hard to narrow it down but Jacques Demy’s Lola definitely has my attention (you had me at ‘cabaret’, mon amie!). For more information and listings, skip over here.
With so much happening there’s never been a better time to hit the theatres. Will you be heading to one of these cinematic spectaculars?
Save me a seat…
