Friday Hi-Fives: Celebrations, Cake and Cinema

Whoosh! It’s the end of the week AND the start of a new month – January seems to have just flown by, doesn’t it? I hope your 2017 is off to a fun and fabulous start so far.

Lately, I’ve visited a few new places around town to grab a bite to eat – including Chaakoo and Temaki in the city centre, and you can expect much more on Temaki next week! I’ve also been doing a ton of research for our big US road trip in a couple of months – making notes and bookmarking all of the places we want to check out.

This week, I’ve been making plans to catch up with some friends that I haven’t seen in a long time – including Silvia, who is in town celebrating her company Chouchou’s seventh birthday (SEVEN YEARS?! How did that happen?) for a few days. I’m also excited to see my friend Fiona, because no matter how long it’s been, we always pick up where we left off the last time.

If you’re in Glasgow tomorrow and fancy something a bit different, Ross Street Market is on from 11am to 5pm at The Barras. Expect art, food, drink and more from the likes of Julie’s Street Kitchen, Freddy & Hicks and other local independent companies. My mouth is already watering at the thought of Julie’s Malaysian-inspired street food!

Before I drift off into a food-related daydream, let’s share some more good stuff!

This week, I’m hi-fiving because…

…I’m STILL obsessing over La La Land and I’m plotting a repeat trip to the cinema. If you HAVEN’T seen it yet, put it on your to-do list and check out Gary’s (spoiler-free) thoughts to get you started

…Ayden’s been supporting the Jo’s Cervical Cancer #SmearForSmear campaign and talking all about why us girls shouldn’t be skipping those important appointments

…multicoloured holographic nails, you say? If I’m walking around staring at my hands and bumping into walls then you know why (and it’s all Swoon Nails’ handiwork!)

…Junk Kouture is arriving in Glasgow next week with its show of fashion design and wearable art from young talent – find out more about the event and how to attend here

…we spent a lovely afternoon lunching and laughing to celebrate my dad’s birthday last weekend. Oh, and it’s not a birthday without cake, am I right?

Here’s to making this weekend awesome – I’ve got a busy week ahead so I fully intend to spend the next few days hanging out with my nearest and dearest.

Who gets your hi-fives today?

Until next week…

The Return of the Blogger Sleepover

blogger sleepover

Take six gals in their nightwear, add a seriously gorgeous hotel and throw in some tasty treats, pampering and crafts and, well…you have the return of the mack blogger sleepover my friends! Actually, make that the return of the #grandcentralsleepover because it’s not a real gathering unless it has a hashtag, am I right?

Some of you might remember that we enjoyed a pyjama party last year in Glasgow’s luxurious Grand Central Hotel to kick off the holiday season. We were super excited to be invited back again this year (TO THE DAY!) to do it all over again!

As soon as Laura, Ayden, Lori, Lisa & Sami and I checked into our rooms and changed into our pyjamas, we met up in our main room to begin the evening of festivities. The room was decorated with a pretty Christmas tree sprinkled with faux frost and brightly coloured baubles – just the thing to get us into the seasonal spirit!

What’s a girly sleepover without some beauty fun? Luckily, Frenchie from Grease wasn’t around to pierce anyone’s ears but we DID have the lovely Emma from Benefit at House of Fraser to give us a round of brow treatments! I was absolutely thrilled with my eyebrows afterwards, which were tinted and waxed using the same techniques you’d find at the Benefit Boutique in store.

Next up, we took our make up off in one Clean Sweep to try out some face masks by Soap & Glory and did our best Mrs Doubtfire impressions (“hellooooo dear!”) – while the masks worked their magic. I tried the No Clogs Allowed clay mask, which has a warm sensation on the skin as it cleanses. I felt fresh as a daisy afterwards! DIY gel manicures were also on the agenda thanks to Sensational’s nifty polish to gel transformer kit and tools from Brushworks. Sami gave herself some ruby red nails to rival Rudolph’s nose!

All this pampering was bound to have us peckish and, right on cue, a delicious buffet from Grand Central Hotel’s Tempus restaurant arrived at the door!

The spread was utterly delicious and we had just about enough room left to nibble some candy and popcorn (and Poshcorn!) while having a catch up. The run up to Christmas can get so hectic, it was lovely just to relax in our PJ’s and chat.

We were kept hydrated with a selection of drinks from the likes of Botonique, Rejuvenation Water, 6Somewhere, Naturelly and Virtue Drinks before moving onto our next activity: making our own Christmas tree decorations!

We had lots of Hobbycraft materials to play with including pom noms, glitter, stickers and paint. I was so pleased with my first attempt that I made a second one (and I’m happy to report that a few weeks later both have held up perfectly!).

After that, we all piled onto the oversized bed and watched some TV before calling it a night… or so we thought! Turns out we were all still up chatting and messaging each other for an extra couple of hours after that. We were pretty sure by the time we fell asleep that Lori was being followed by a celebrity ghost but I guess you had to be there to really understand the level of heebie jeebies involved!

There was just enough time for us to grab breakfast in the morning before we headed our separate ways. Does it really get any better than a hotel buffet breakfast? To me, they are one of the best parts of any hotel stay and it was great to finish up our get-together over eggs and coffee.

This year’s blogger sleepover was so much fun, and the BEST way to celebrate another year of blogging (and another year of being friends with this bunch!). Our Laura (AKA the #grandorganiser) truly outdid herself by co-ordinating such a wonderful event! Same time next year, ladies?

Here’s to staying up way too late, sugar highs and face mask selfies…

The #grandcentralsleepover couldn’t have been made possible without Grand Central Hotel being such amazing hosts (again!!). We also had some fabulous brands to help make the event a success – all of which are mentioned and / or linked above!

Friday Hi-Fives: Birthday Fun, Blogger Shop & Bosley!

Blogger shop

Happy Friday, you gorgeous creature! The last time we were hi-fiving, it was the evening before I was due to go and pick up our little kitten and to say I was excited is a slight understatement! SO…he’s home, his name is Bosley (or #exoticbosley if you fancy some Insta-stalking) and he is settling in just nicely. You can expect to see more of him around here, but in the meantime let me fill you in on what else has been going on…

Last week it was my birthday and I gave myself permission to take a few days off and R-E-L-A-X because if you can’t do your own thing on your birthday, when can you? I got utterly spoiled with some gorgeous gifts and time with friends and family – I’m feeling like a very lucky girl indeed.

After going out on Thursday AND Friday night, I decided that I needed some TLC, so on Saturday I arranged to go and get my first ever lash lift by Melissa AKA The Beauty Business at Pixie Hair & Beauty (the same salon I went to for some awesome makeup earlier this year!). I’ll be giving you guys more details on what was involved and how it went really soon, I promise! Afterwards I headed to Three Little Birds Spa on Great Western Road for a deluxe (and uber-sparkly) pedicure before heading back home.

On Sunday we held our first ever Scottish Blogger Shop at Hillhead Bookclub, which was a LOT of fun! We were really grateful that so many of you decided to come down and hang out with us for the day, and it was amazing to meet so many lovely new people. Here’s to the next one, eh?

This week, I went along to the House Of Fraser AW16 press dinner and got to know their new in-house lifestyle brand, Maison de Nimes. With a really relaxed, Californian vibe and some cute palm leaf patterned dresses, I’d say that the label is going to be a big hit! The next night, it was time for some more birthday celebrations, so to get in the mood I visited the all-new MAC counter at House Of Fraser and had my makeup done by one of the MUA’s. I loved my vintage-inspired look and headed out for dinner with Lori, Laura and Ayden feeling like a shiny new penny.

I’m ready for the weekend, how about you?

This week, I’m hi-fiving because…

…I checked out the new Taste Buchanan street food hub at Buchanan Galleries and my tastebuds were VERY grateful! With a range of savoury and sweet options under one roof, the hardest part was picking what to eat first!

…this weekend ISOLATED HEROES have brought the glitz and glamour of Vegas to an exclusive two-day pop-up over at Southblock. I’ll be heading down over the weekend to get my sequin fix, see you there?

…did you know that you can drink beer and change the world for the better? Check out the work that Brewgooder are doing and prepare to be impressed! I don’t drink beer myself but I couldn’t help but feel inspired by this one.

…if you’re in town tomorrow and love a bit of vintage fashion, my beautiful friend Casci will be sharing her (vast!) knowledge of 1940s Glaswegian style over at Tenement House as part of their WWII weekend activities.

…and if you’re in Edinburgh, this is your last chance to visit Urban Reivers’ pop-up in George Street and shop the fabulous local talent they are showcasing.

Well, I plan to make the very most of the next three days with Gary and Bosley so I hope you have a magical long weekend and I’ll see you next week!
