Staying and Playing… At Farmer’s Daughter Hotel, LA

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

Here’s a fun fact you guys might not know about me: when I was 16, my first job was working in a fancy hotel. Seeing how the hospitality industry operated from the inside out made me appreciate the little details and the effort that goes into a running hotel. Oh, and it’s also shaped me into an official hotel nerd!

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

When we were picking a place to stay for our 4 nights in LA, we wanted somewhere with a central location, awesome style and a little bit of an edge – so Farmer’s Daughter hotel felt like the perfect choice.

I enjoyed our stay there so much, I wanted to share some details today…

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

As non-drivers we didn’t want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, so the fact that Farmer’s Daughter is within walking distance of a lot of visitor attractions made it really easy to plan our days. We were just across the road from The Grove and about ten minutes from Melrose. CBS and the trendy 3rd Street were just a hop, skip and jump away. Oh, and you could see the Hollywood sign from the hotel (it’s the little things, huh?)!

We were never stuck for something to eat, as there were tons of options across the street and the hotel’s own restaurant, TART (more on that below!) to choose from.

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

If you hadn’t already guessed from the name, the overall vibe of this boutique hotel is country bumpkin meets LA chic – think oversized gingham walls, barn-style doors and high-end products. The team are kitted out in denim shirts and you can graze on home-made potato chips in the lobby while you talk to the budgies who hang out there, chirping away.

After a couple of busy days at Disney (and even busier to come), having somewhere relaxing to come home to was super important to us. The rooms at Farmer’s Daughter are a decent size, with good use of space to create a feeling of calm (everything you need is there, but cleverly stowed away in purpose-built units so there’s not much clutter).

There are extra treats in the room, but if you decide to eat them, there’s a hefty price tag attached, so watch out for that! But the Nespresso machine, pods and toiletries are all included in the price of your stay. Plus, they serve free whisky in the lobby in the evening – so if that’s your thing, it probably all works out OK, right?

The outdoor areas of the hotel are very inviting, with a cute pool area (I mean, come ON! They have yellow rubber ducks in the pool!), fooseball and lots of outdoor courtyard seating. The warm weather could make it very easy to lose a whole evening curled up on the sofas!

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

The hotel also houses a very popular restaurant, TART – which specialises in seasonal comfort food, fitting in with the cosy feel of the rest of Farmer’s Daughter. We loved watching all of the LA regulars pop in for a bite to eat while enjoying a long, lazy brunch with piping hot coffee.

Farmer's Daughter Hotel

Overall, I would say that staying at Farmer’s Daughter gave us the opportunity to live like locals for a few days. We were able to walk outside and go about our day immediately, only really needing Uber a couple of times for the further away areas like Venice Beach and the Hollywood Hills.

The little details and overall vibe made this hotel nerd very happy! Tell me, have you ever stayed in an LA hotel? Where should I visit next?

A Sleepover at The Bonham Hotel, Edinburgh

Over the last couple of years, I’ve started spending more and more of my time through in Edinburgh – whether it’s visiting friends, going on fun-filled days out or heading to events in the city. There are some areas of the capital that I’m not as familiar with yet and the leafy West End of Edinburgh is one of them – it seems filled with pretty neighbourhoods just itching to be explored.

When Laura got in touch to invite a few of us to her summer blogger sleepover, I was excited to see that our setting was The Bonham – one of Edinburgh’s oldest boutique hotels, located in a quiet West End street. I always look forward to Laura’s Glasgow sleepover events and going to a different city with my little pink suitcase felt like a mini holiday this time around!

I was the first one in our group to arrive, which meant I could spend a few minutes admiring the beautiful converted townhouse (which is spacious enough to hold almost fifty rooms and suites!) with its grand staircases and high ceilings. There was a statue in the reception area that reminded me of Bosley, so I felt at home right away…

After meeting Laura, we were taken to our luxurious sleepover suite which The Bonham hotel staff had thoughtfully kitted out with blankets, DVDs and white chocolate ‘Welcome’ cards. Enormous windows gave us a stunning view of the entire street and soon we were joined by the rest of the girls and got into our pyjamas.

The coffee table was quickly groaning with sweet treats (and that was before the hotel had even served us any food!). I’d visited the lovely Madamoiselle Macaron earlier that day and picked up some of their famous macarons for us all to try. Lori brought along a Victoria sponge and Lisa had baked a lemon loaf cake. Laura’s creation was the showstopper – a home-made raspberry buttercream cake Mary Berry would be proud of!

Our evening was packed with girly activities with top notch brow treatments from Benefit, summer jewellery making (kits supplied by Hobbycraft – and if you were wondering whether you can have too many tassels, the answer is no, no you cannot!) and a chance for us all to relax while having a good gossip about the best and worst of reality TV.

The team at The Bonham made sure that we were well-looked after and brought a delicious selection of food to the room.

I especially enjoyed our starters (poached Leven Farm duck eggs with asparagus and a grain mustard dressing) and desserts (a dense, dreamy chocolate mousse with pistachio parfait and edible flowers) but all of the dishes were delicious!

A chocolate fondue was brought in last as we snuggled up under the blankets and watched a movie. The room had plenty of sofas and armchairs and was spacious enough for us to stretch out. Call it a food coma (4 hours of grazing will do that to a gal!), or maybe it was too much excitement, but I found myself flagging just after midnight and my soft, squishy bed was calling me.

The next morning, the girls and I regrouped and headed downstairs to The Restaurant for a hearty breakfast before we checked out, ready to take on the rest of the weekend. We even managed to fit in a walk through the West End streets on our way to the station!

I had a wonderful time during our stay at The Bonham and, for me, the stand-out factor was the service – the team were very pleasant and helpful throughout and sometimes it’s nice to forego the option of self serve and feel like you’re in good hands.

With thanks to all at The Bonham hotel – this trip was arranged for review purposes, but all views and food babies are mine.

Getting Road Trip Ready: Bikinis with Boohoo

boohoo

This year, I’m going on my biggest adventure yet – a road trip across America with Gary and our two best friends – and I just can’t WAIT! It’s only two months before we set off (*squeals*) and it’s definitely about time I started preparing for this heck of a holiday.

First things first! Between beaches, hotel pools and um, a hot tub in the mountains (yeah, really!), one thing is certain: I’m going to need a swimsuit! I’d just started browsing some new season swimwear when, with impeccable timing, the team at Boohoo got in touch asking me to take a look at their latest drop of bikinis and suits for an evening of spa treats with them. Who could say no to that?

boohoo

Picking out a bikini from Boohoo was easier said than done! With a ton of bright colours and playful patterns to choose from, there’s really something to suit everyone in the new collection and I was spoilt for choice. I am a huge fan of retro high-waisted bottoms, so my first choice was this adorable Ava watermelon print bikini. As much as I loved it the fun pattern (dressing like a bowl of fruit is a recurring theme in my summer wardrobe…) , the fit wasn’t quite right so I swapped it out for another high-waisted option.

As well as having ready-to-go sets, Boohoo also have a selection of mix and match swimwear – perfect if you fancy coming up with your own combinations to suit your style. I picked out their Corfu moulded triangle bikini top and the matching high-waisted briefs and got ready for a night at Village Hotel Club Glasgow with some other blogging babes!

I’d never actually visited a Village Hotel before, so the hotel geek in me was really looking forward to it! I loved the cool, contemporary decor at reception, and the spa area was very relaxing. As well as enjoying a dip in the (heated!) indoor pool, and a blether in the jacuzzi, we also spent some time in the spa lounge.

After being treated so some tasty nibbles and drinks, the beauty therapists from the Village Spa led us through an interactive skincare workshop. After scrubbing and rubbing my face with gorgeous-smelling ESPA products, my skin was glowing and felt super hydrated. DIY facials might just become a regular thing for this gal – watch this space…

Escaping to this girly get-together for a few hours was the perfect cure for the cold weather blues! This event was part of the Boohoo ‘Treat Yourself’ Spa Tour and, if you fancy treating yourself too, here are some handy discount codes: for an exclusive 10% discount off treatments or food and drink at Village Hotels, use voucher BOOHOO10 – and for 20% off everything at Boohoo use voucher BOOHOOXVILLAGESPA20 – hooray!

With a cute and very colourful bikini to start off my suitcase, I’m starting to feel the holiday excitement! Have you started looking at any swimsuits this year? If you could dress like a piece of fruit, which would you choose?

Here’s to poolside posing and hot tub gossip sessions…
