Faux Sure! Decorating with Artificial Plants

I have a confession to make, you guys. Lean in. Closer.

OK, ready?

I’m a serial plant killer. I’ve let countless plants perish under my watch and most of the time I have no idea how it even happens, but it does and here we are! One of the reasons why I love my cacti so much (aside from how aesthetically pleasing they are, obviously) is that they have managed to survive life with me this far, so must be some sort of wonder plant (possible) or just require very minimal care (most likely).

But aside from my cacti and succulents, I’ve had no luck whatsoever. Big plants, little plants… you name it, I’ve killed it (apart from one Yukka plant which made a lucky escape and now is being rehabilitated by my mother at her house – true story!).

I love how plants look in our big, sunny flat though – so what’s a gal to do? About six months ago, I made a discovery so obvious I couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it sooner! I was procrastinating browsing in IKEA one day when I noticed that they sold some pretty great looking artificial plants, including a big plush-guy that I thought would look nice in the living room. Before I knew it, he was in the trolley and I was looking at some other smaller ‘plants’.

You might be thinking, don’t artificial plants look tacky though? And I wouldn’t blame you if you are – I know I sure was! But, I think it’s like anything home-related though, shop around, style it to fit in with your decor and THEN make up your mind.

Now we have a few different types of faux flora dotted around the flat and we actually couldn’t be happier with how they look. Plus, the empty plant pots we had before just reminded me of past victims and were bumming me out a bit (!). We get to enjoy the LOOK of lots of greenery, but with no more plants needlessly suffering – it’s a win-win if you ask me!

Our most recent addition is this hanging ivy-style plant, which hilariously came in a flat-pack box in the post. It was a couple of pounds from Amazon and gave us something to sit on a random high corner-shelf in the bathroom (one of those old, quirky Tenement features!) while fitting in with the overall style of the space.

Bringing artificial plants into our interiors wasn’t something I expected to try, but I’m so glad that we gave them a shot! Along with our little selection of cacti, we have the most low-maintainance collection of plants imaginable – but me and my conscience are just fine with that.

And if I somehow manage to kill the fake ones? Well, that’s GOT to be some kind of skill, surely?!

Have you ever given faux plants a try?

Welcome to Our Bathroom!

It’s fair to say that this post has been a long time coming. A few of you will have noticed that I’ve been recording a lot of our bathroom renovation progress as we’ve been going along on Twitter and Instagram Stories. I thought it was about time I showed off the finished product!

When we moved into our home, the one room that I couldn’t wait to change was our bathroom. Don’t get me wrong, it was fine – plain, clean and inoffensive.

But that’s the thing, as we started to style our other rooms, I couldn’t help but feel that the bathroom wasn’t keeping up with the splashes of colour and other features we’d added. It needed to step up its game!

So after a lot of planning and hard work, our bathroom is finally finished. I’m excited to invite you in for a peek today…

I think the thing that I’m most proud of when it comes to this renovation project is that we did it ourselves. Gary and my dad did all of the refit and decorating work (nice job, eh?), and I made most of the design and materials decisions. It was a real team effort!

We also managed to pull it off on a modest budget – it ended up costing a fraction what we thought it would when we started planning. The biggest saving was on our bathroom suite, which we decided to keep. Everything else has been completely re-done, re-imagined and replaced.

I’ve tried to name everything I thought you guys might be interested in, but if there’s something you see here that I haven’t mentioned and want to know more, please let me know!

Project bathroom makeover is finally complete, and we couldn’t be happier with how it’s all come together! It’s the perfect space to relax and have a good ol’ pamper (and Bosley loves hanging out in the new bathroom too!).

I hope you’ve enjoyed this little tour of our new bathroom. Have you got any home projects planned this year?
