beauty hit list

Well, well, well – look what the wind blew in! It’s only time for another beauty hit list, and if you’re anything like me, your cosmetic choices are starting to reflect this time of year. From nourishing skincare to uber-glam makeup, it’s a truly autumnal selection this time around!

Let’s jump in and see what’s made it into my September and October must-haves…

Himalayan Charcoal Purifying Glow Mask by The Body Shop

Is there anything more satisfying than slathering on a face mask and letting it do its thing? Yes! Slathering on a face mask and FEELING it work its magic on your skin. I’ve been using this one from The Body Shop’s new range of masks for just over a month now and not only do I love the end result (super clear, glowing skin) but I also really enjoy the tingling sensation of wearing it.

This mud-textured mask is packed with bamboo charcoal which means it’s also exfoliating and gives your face a good scrub when rinsing it off Ahh! I also recently learned that it’s 100% vegan so it’s suitable for most beauty lovers too.

Aveda’s Tulasara Radiant Awakening Ritual

While we’re on the topic of skincare, at this time of year it becomes even harder to avoid dull skin – most mornings I want to just (gently!) slap my cheeks and tell ’em to wake up! Over the last year, I’ve discovered facial oils and started using them in my daily routine. No, they don’t make your face oily (though it’s an easy assumption to make!), but they DO shrink pores, banish zits and protect your skin.

Aveda recently released their latest oleation oil and facial brush combo as a powerful combination to awaken the skin and restore its radiance. Talk about a power couple! In true Aveda style, this technique is designed to be a daily ritual and Tulasara is all about boosting microcirculation and nourishing the skin at the very start of your day. If this doesn’t wake up my skin, nothing will!

Instant Confidence Stick by Bobbi Brown

This handy little line corrector from Bobbi Brown is like having the eraser at the end of a pencil, smoothing out and blurring fine lines before I dive into my makeup bag.

With the same kind of silky, weightless formula you’d find in your favourite primer, this is a great on-the-go tool to keep in your handbag and use whenever you need to touch up your makeup and blot out shiny patches. It might not do that work presentation for you, but it WILL help you feel your best so that you can go forth and kick ass! Instant confidence indeed.

Dolly Rocks nails by House of Holland x Elegant Touch

We’re moving towards party season quicker than you can say Cha-Cha Slide which means the diaries are bound to start filling up with dinners, parties and (if you’re lucky!) all-night karaoke sessions. But what about those impromptu do’s? Those ones that seem to ambush you at say, 4pm on a Friday? It’s good to have a few things in your emergency glam arsenal just in case you have 20 minutes to get ready (and let’s face it, maybe even in a public loo?!), and Elegant Touch’s press-on nails are just the fellas for the job.

HOWEVER. I really don’t think I’ve seen any nails that scream party time quite like these Dolly Rocks ones, specially designed by House of Holland for Elegant Touch. Gloriously pink, suit-anyone almond shaped and encrusted with gems, I just can’t help but smile when I look at them. They’re also super easy to apply and will last up to 10 days if you look after them. One for karaoke queens everywhere. Let’s go, girls…

Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Glastonberry

Fun fact: I picked up this rich, blackcurrant-hued lip colour about 4 months ago on a trip to Selfridges, and for a couple of months I’ll be totally honest and tell you that it didn’t see the light of day. But now? Well, I’m wearing it at least two or three times a week – in fact even as I write this I’m wearing Glastonberry right now!

Unlike a lot of matte effect lipsticks, Charlotte Tilbury’s colours have softening and hydrating properties – no sign of dry, flaky lips here! The colour is also very buildable, depending on how bold you want to go. The actual shape of the lipstick itself makes it easy to apply without liner, as the square tip mimics the shape of a lip brush. Plus, the colour is super vampy, perfect for Halloween and beyond.

Leopards and Spiders and Bears (Oh My!) – Dressing Up For Brunch

dressing up for brunch

I love any excuse to get all gussied up, even if it’s just to grab brunch at one of our cosy weekend spots. A couple of weeks ago we decided to go to Singl-End because it had been too long since I’d had some of their sweet potato & almond loaf – not that I ever need an excuse…

I’d just visited Charlotte Tilbury’s new counter for a makeup appointment that morning and was feeling extra fancy (if you want a rundown of the products I’m wearing catch up with this post)!

Extra fancy surely calls for a feel-good ensemble and I’d been dying for a chance to wear this not-vintage-but-hey-doesn’t-it-look-kinda-vintage red frock that I’d picked up at Debenhams. I love the squiggle print and oversized kimono sleeves, plus the fitted shape makes me feel like a sassy typist at Sterling Cooper. Though if Don Draper ever seen my typing I wouldn’t last too long!

There was definitely a theme when it came to my accessories and it seemed to be ANIMALS! Believe it or not, the pretty scarf I’m wearing in my hair is actually adorned with big, hairy tarantulas! It’s a hand-drawn design by Heather Margaret Grace, printed on silk and made right here in Scotland.

Covered with vintage-inspired colours, it felt like the perfect match for my dress.

Next up, may I introduce you to Leonard the Leopard? This little guy – and his dapper bow tie – might just be my new favourite necklace! I first came across And Mary’s whimsical porcelain jewellery about a year ago after swooning over them in Godiva boutique in Edinburgh. Admittedly, I am rather late to the party – the clever husband and wife team behind the brand have been around for nearly seven years!

Along with Leonard, I’m also wearing a baby polar bear ring by And Mary. There’s nothing like having a tiny porcelain bear hugging your finger to make you smile every time you look down at your hand. It may look bulky, but I found this very easy to wear.

So, with an entire menagerie of accessories on my person, we headed out for brunch! I might not make it as a 1960s secretary – maybe I’d make a good zookeeper..?

And as for the sweet potato and almond bread? It was well worth the wait!

Do you like dressing up for brunch? What are your thoughts on dressing like a Mad Men character that wandered through a zoo on the way to the office?

The Art of the Lip With MAC Liptensity

MAC Liptensity

Since I first started wearing makeup, lipstick has been my ultimate indulgence. I’ve been incorporating a bold, bright lip into my personal style for well over a decade now (yikes!) and there’s nothing like a new lipstick collection to get my heart fluttering!

So, when I first heard about MAC Liptensity – a new collection of super-pigmented lip colours, I couldn’t wait to get the full scoop and discover some new shades to add to my regular rotation.

MAC Liptensity

Finding and creating a new line of lipsticks is hard enough but, when you already have the existing range that MAC does… well, let’s just say you need to call in the big guns and get to work on something truly unique. Which is exactly what MAC have done!

MAC Liptensity

Working with tetrachromat Maureen Seaberg (who has the ability to see up to 100 million hues imperceptible to the average eye), MAC Liptensity encapsulates 24 brand new colours with something for every makeup bag. This innovative approach is called High-Frequency Tetrachromatic Pigments technology – and means that the brand have been able to produce lipsticks in never-seen-before colours. A tall order, when you consider the sheer volume of lipsticks in production right now!

MAC Liptensity

I went along to the newly-launched MAC counter at House of Fraser recently to meet with MUA Michelle O’ Neill and get to know the new collection better.

MAC Liptensity

First of all, if you haven’t had a chance to check out the new MAC concession yet, put it on your to-do list the next time you go shopping in Glasgow! Bigger, brighter and beautifully merchandised, it’s the ultimate playground for makeup lovers. Right now, MAC are crushing hard on lipsticks, showcasing their take on The Art of the Lip with creative and colourful looks.

The MAC Liptensity collection has everything you need to create your new signature lip, with some dreamy colour names to boot. From Double Fudge (an intense, dark brown) to Gumball (a creamy baby pink),  Mulling Spices (a deep, burgundy-red) and beyond.

MAC Liptensity

I instantly fell in love with Habanero – a vibrant orange-red – from the collection, and Michelle incorporated this into the makeup look that she applied on me.

Usually I’m more of a vintage-inspired red (a la Lady Bug by MAC) or bright pink (hello, Girl About Town) kinda gal but, as the Liptensity collection is all about pushing the boundaries, it only felt right to try something new!

MAC Liptensity

Michelle decided to let my bold lip colour take centre stage and created a bespoke look with porcelain skin, winged eyeliner and warm, neutral eyeshadows. I couldn’t get over how eye-catching my lip colour was and I loved the fiery orange shade.

Since my appointment, I’ve been wearing a couple of the new colours (Habanero, of course, Gumball and Burnt Violet – a dark plum) and, as well as being very impressed with the soft, creamy formulas (that almost feel as though they are hugging my lips), I also can’t help but admire their undeniable staying power – lasting me through dinner and a trip to Starbucks after just one application.

The full MAC Liptensity collection is available now. Will you find a new take on your signature lip colour or try something totally unique?
