Beauty Hit List: April & May 2017

April and May have gone by in a flash and suddenly it’s time for another Beauty Hit List! These are the latest products that I’ve been reaching for and, as always, some are new releases while the others are simply new to me!

Let’s dive in and take a look…

Marula Oil range by Paul Mitchell

One of the reasons why I don’t tend to grow my hair out much is because I have really, REALLY thick hair. And, no matter what length it is, it can get a bit difficult to manage if I don’t look after it! I love discovering new ways to treat my locks and keep them feeling soft and the Marula Oil styling products have the moisture boost of a hair mask built into their sprays and creams. The Rare Oil Style Extending Primer is my favourite from the collection – it’s been ideal for quenching my hair during the hot weather lately.

Solait SPF 50 Moisturising Sun Lotion by Superdrug

I’m a bit of a broken record when it comes to wearing sunscreen I will admit but, at this time of year, it’s more important than ever to have a tube of SPF 50 in your handbag. One of the best things about summer is how spontaneous you can be, right? An afternoon in the park can suddenly turn into dinner al fresco (and beyond), so I’m keeping this Superdrug Solait sunscreen handy for wherever the day takes me. Feel the burn? Not on my watch!

Unicorn Snot glitter hair and body gel

Had to. I was in a drugstore in Aspen earlier this month when a basket of sparkles caught my eye and, when I investigated further, I found jars of Unicorn Snot! Not only did I give in to the name but the sparkly gel also made me feel very nostalgic! I figured it would come in handy for glitter roots, smearing on my cheekbones and much more. Plus, it’s a jar of pink glitter, guys – I don’t need any other reasons. Ten bucks well spent!  #sorrynotsorry

Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Let’s Go Crazy by NARS

Oh, friends – if there was ever a clever ploy to entice me to buy a beauty product, naming the colours after Prince songs is a surefire way to win me over! Dig if you will, the picture: I was cruising the aisles in Sephora and checking out the NARS counter when, all of a sudden, the names of the shades started to feel oh-so-familiar. Dirty Mind. Do Me, Baby. Get Off. Pop Life. It was the dream we all dream of (or at least, the dream I dream of!). So I limited myself to just one – a rich, vivid pink in Let’s Go Crazy. I can’t promise that I won’t go back for the others soon though – after all, what good is a playlist with only one song?

Well Heeled Express Pedicure System by Magnitone

Summer means sandals, and sandals usually mean getting your feet out. Which is great, except I’ve had tights and boots on for the last five months and I don’t think you’re ready for these tootsies. Heck, I’m not sure I am! However, there’s something super relaxing about giving yourself a home pedicure, and this express system from Magnitone is ideal for buffing and smoothing my feet during a Netflix marathon. So if you see me parading around in open-toed shoes, it’s all down to Magnitone!

I guess this edition of the Beauty Hit List really does cover everything from head to toe! But what else do I need to check out? Be sure to tell me what’s made your list too!

Foam & For-Tune by Soap & Glory

Singing in the shower (or the bath!) is actively encouraged with this magical musical tin from Soap and Glory’s Glitzmas collection. I don’t know many ladies that DON’T wish for Soap & Glory at Christmas time and, from this years extensive range, Foam & For-Tune is a super fun gift for anyone who loves their pamper time with a big ol’ slice of kitsch!

In typical Soap & Glory style, this is a very PINK and nicely packaged present, containing a host of miniature best-sellers including Clean on Me shower gel, The Scrub of Your Life body buffer, Sugar Crush body wash, body scrub & buttercream (best smell ever!), The Righteous Butter body butter and a pink shower puff. As if this little lot wasn’t enough to get into a lather over, the keepsake tin also sings! You can pick Foam & For-Tune up at Boots stores and online for £16.

Lush Christmas

Does it get more fun than Lush at Christmas? Every year I wonder if they can possibly come up with something new (and secretly hope that a few old favourites will return!), and each time I’m completely dazzled with seasonal soaps, glittering gifts and – oh yes – special edition smellies!

I love their brightly-packaged gift sets, which come in a whole range of shapes and sizes. The Ice Ice Baby gift (left) has your secret Santa all wrapped up, coming in at just under a tenner and containing a super fresh combo of Igloo soap and Snowman shower jelly. Best Wishes on the other hand (IN the other hand??) is pretty much a mini ‘best of’ Lush Christmas, with the Golden Wonder bath bomb, Ruby Red Slippers bubble bar and Snowcastle soap. Put it this way: if this set were to sing, it’d sound like Bing Crosby…

Lush’s Christmas range starts at just £2 and you can browse it here!

Cruelty-Free Care for Coloured Hair

IMG_2807

As someone who has been colouring their hair for way over a decade now, I’ve seen the good, the bad and the downright weird when it comes to dyes, treatments and maintenance products.

From flamingo pink, to turquoise, violet and beyond (and oh-so-much bleach!), my poor locks have been through a lot over the years! Nowadays, shiny liquorice-hued hair has been my go-to look, and ever since I got my sleek, 1920s-inspired bob at BLOW about 18 months ago, keeping my hair colour healthy and vibrant is just as important as the cut itself.

I also have sensitive skin on my scalp, so I’m pretty picky about the dyes and products that I choose to put in my hair. No-one likes to feel THAT kind of burn, trust me!

Recently, I was introduced to Paul Mitchell’s Color Protect range, which I’ve started to use to wash, condition and strengthen my hair colour. So far, I’ve been really impressed. As well as being a leading salon brand, Paul Mitchell also have become well-known for their cruelty-free approach to product development – standing up for furry friends since 1980.

So, not only are their products kind to my hair colour and my scalp – but also kind to animals. Now, that’s something I can truly get behind!

The Color Protect Daily Shampoo helps colour to last longer and boosts shine, while the Color Protect Daily Conditioner moisturises and smooths hair. Both work together to prevent hair colour from fading and protect against UVA and UVB rays (and with so many sunny days recently, heat protection is a must!). It’s no secret that the sun’s rays can seriously affect hair colour, so for extra protection I’ve been spritzing my hair with Paul Mitchell’s Color Protect Locking Spray – which does an awesome job of extending colour intensity.

But what about vegan dyes? After a consultation with my stylist, Rachel at BLOW, I decided to incorporate some animal-friendly colour into my latest dye job. In case you hadn’t heard, BLOW have recently partnered with Manic Panic hair colour – another company that stands against animal testing – and have incorporated the brand’s range into their menu of hair treats. With so many fun shades to choose from, we talked about mixing two together to create a custom colour  – a twist on a classic!

Mixing together Manic Panic’s After Midnight and Raven, the result was an intense black with a slight blue sheen and a ton of shine. Who said that cutting back on chemicals meant cutting back on quality?

Cleansing and conditioning my newly-dyed locks with the Color Protect range also means that my hair colour still packs a punch AND stays nice and glossy!

With a rainbow of shades available at BLOW and an amazing range of products from Paul Mitchell to help keep things bold and beautiful, there’s never been a better – or easier – time to choose cruelty-free care for coloured hair.

Do you have any tried-and-tested favourites when it comes to gentle, animal-friendly products? Has your hair colour changed over the years too?

Love,
