I Found The Hidden Lane – and You Can, Too!

the hidden lane

When people ask me what my favourite thing about Glasgow is (and it happens frequently!), I always say this: Glasgow is never boring. There’s always something exciting and unique, just waiting to be discovered – and, last weekend, I found that The Hidden Lane is the perfect example of that.

the hidden lane

If you’ve never heard of The Hidden Lane, let me bring you up to speed! Tucked behind the main streets of Finnieston, this hub of creativity is home to over 100 (!) independent businesses. Artists, shops, cafes, workshops and more occupy the brightly coloured buildings and quirky studio spaces.

But when there’s so much happening in the one place, where do you even begin? You call in the experts! For us, that was Mhairi, the fabulous ladyboss behind Bonnie Bling, who very kindly invited us along for a tour of the lane.

We started with hot drinks and festive themed treats at The Hidden Lane Tearoom (the chocolate ganache was to die for!) before hitting the cobbles and checking out the curiosities and treasures at Tart’s antique store. They had a VINTAGE DISNEY POSTER in Spanish, you guys. We left and headed over to the super adorable Uptown Squirrel designs just in time – and my bank balance remained intact.

As well as visiting some awesome stores (such as Decadent Riot, Cloud Nine Candles and Studio Number One), we also got a peek into some of the studios where the design magic happens. No room was off-limits! It was almost like an episode of Cribs – in fact, the only thing missing was Mariah Carey working out in a pair of ridiculous heels…

ANYWAY.

Seeing the Bonnie Bling HQ with pieces of iconic Scottish jewellery coming hot off the laser cutter was a huge highlight (you know my love for the Bling goes way back!), as was getting a decorative bauble demo from Libby Walker in her bright studio.

Visiting Vanilla Ink’s metal workshop space was a lot of fun, and I even had a go at making my own keyring! Gary took a sharp breath and stepped back when I was handed the hammer – and I think he was as surprised as me to see that I managed to come away with one keyring and zero injuries. Maybe I’m good with a hammer? Am I Thor now?

After a few more visits, we finished up the tour at New Hellfire Club record store, before hitting Lean Factory for some lunch and fruit smoothies. Lean Factory is a fairly new addition to The Hidden Lane, and their pastel coloured cafe is the perfect place for a pit stop!

Fancy exploring The Hidden Lane yourself? Get your diary ready…

On Saturday 25th November, The Hidden Lane are throwing a festive daytime event to launch their Hidden Christmas shopping extravaganza. There’ll be over 20 open shops and studios to explore, competitions, sweet treats, pop-ups, live music and you can even have a go at making your own keyring at Vanilla Ink.

The fun starts at 12pm – though if you want to go along a little early to get a cuppa at the Hidden Lane Tearoom I fully support that plan!

Over the course of December, The Hidden Lane’s retailers will also be revealing special offers on their social media advent calendar – so keep your eyes peeled to @hiddenlanefinnieston on Instagram for more details…

Whether you fancy getting a start on your Christmas shopping, or want to discover some amazing local businesses and creatives, The Hidden Lane is the perfect place to start!

Oh, Boy! Kiehl’s Mickey Mouse Holiday Collection

Kiehl's Mickey Mouse holiday collection

Call me biased, but I think that the latest face of Kiehl’s has to be my favourite yet! No, I’m not talking about McConaughey – though he IS doing a pretty fabulous job helping Kiehl’s support Autism Speaks (well, alright, alright, alright…) – I’m talking about Mickey Mouse!

That’s right, Kiehl’s and Disney have teamed up to give some of my very favourite skincare products a Mickey makeover; just in time for the holidays. Oh, boy! I was very excited to see that the new-look Creme de Corps was dropping at Kiehl’s Glasgow and couldn’t wait to pop into the Buchanan Street store for a sneaky peek…

Kiehl's Mickey Mouse holiday collection

Creme de Corps is one of my (and Gary’s!) most-used products and we usually splash out on the 500ml size so that we don’t fight over the bottle! This hand and body butter is super nourishing with a light, creamy fragrance – ideal for keeping dry skin hydrated and smooth, especially at this time of year.

Now that our favourite Disney star is adorning the packaging, we can’t wait to add a new bottle to our bathroom shelf!

Kiehl's Mickey Mouse holiday collection

Other items in the Kiehl’s Mickey Mouse holiday collection will include Richly Hydrating Hand Cream, special edition hydration and facial cleansing gift sets, lip balms, a tub of grapefruit-scented whipped Creme de Corps body butter, an advent calendar (!!) and more. As part of Kiehl’s ongoing dedication to giving back, the sales of these products will also help people in need (check out this article for more details!).

Collaborating with a top luxury skincare brand AND raising money for a good cause? Not bad for a 94-year old mouse!

Special bottles of Creme de Corps from Kiehl’s Mickey Mouse holiday collection are available in-store now, with more products releasing very soon. Will you be adding them to your letter to Santa this year?

DECIEM Arrives in Glasgow: 5 Things You Need to Know

DECIEM

When it comes to beauty brands, Glasgow is a funny old town. Our high streets, shopping malls and department stores are bursting at the seams with cosmetics companies, yet we just can’t seem to get enough! House of Fraser’s beauty haul hall is a perfect example of this – it’s an Aladdin’s Cave of endless lotions and potions, but it’s always making room for new additions to its impressive line-up.

Standing out from the crowd can be tough when there are oh-so-many big names to choose from but, when DECIEM arrived in House of Fraser’s ground floor last week, beauty addicts all over town felt their spidey senses tingling and my Twitter feed was going at light speed!

But who are DECIEM, and why should you be excited about them coming to Glasgow? Here are 5 things to get you started…

DECIEM

  1. DECIEM are an ‘abnormal’ beauty company in the BEST sense of the word! Growing rapidly in just 4 years (starting with just 2 employees, now they have over 120), DECIEM do a lot of things their own way – such as adopting a very hands-on approach to developing the 10+ brands under their company name and being committed to authenticity. If you tell them that they can’t do something, it just spurs them on to prove people wrong – and that’s a philosophy I can totally get behind.
  2. Their price points will surprise you. Six quid for the cult foundation that everyone is raving about? Now, that’s pretty damn fabulous. DECIEM believe that quality isn’t defined by a price tag, so you can pick up your shade (and, psst – they have 21 to choose from!) even if you’re a babe on a budget. DECIEM
  3. DECIEM have more then 10 unique brands under their belt – and they’re all cruelty-free. Taking on skincare, haircare, makeup, supplements, grooming and bodycare is ambitious enough as it is but making sure their practices are cruelty-free shows that DECIEM really are a brand that stick to their guns (and no, they don’t sell in mainland China either!).
  4. Instagram filter in a bottle? #YESPLEASE! DECIEM’s NIOD Photography Fluid was one of those products that beauty writers went bananas over when it was first released and it’s just as popular today. Smoothing, evening and brightening skin for that ‘photo ready’ look, it can be mixed with foundation or worn on its own.
  5. DECIEM’s Hand Chemistry hand cream has been THEE #1 seller at Boots every week. And I know Boots stock a ton of hand cream! Hand Chemistry is a multi-functional cream, targeting dryness, dark spots and signs of ageing. Like a fancy face cream but, y’know, for your paws! It flies off the shelves constantly, and now it’s in House of Fraser too – hooray!

You can find the new DECIEM concession in House of Fraser Buchanan Street; just next to Jo Malone. Will you be paying them a visit? And what sorts of things make YOUR spidey sense tingle?
