As some of you will probably know by now (especially if you’ve been following my adventures over on Twitter and Instagram!), the last few months have been very exciting for us as we’ve gone through the process of buying our first home! After eight years of renting, we stumbled across a flat almost by accident that happened to be for sale. We fell in L-O-V-E with the place and could really see ourselves living there and styling it to our personal taste.
Fast forward just a few weeks and we were picking up the keys, and walking into what is now nicknamed the Rainbow Palace. But it was empty! Going from renting furnished beige (oh, so much beige!) flats to having our very own place to decorate? Talk about being like kids in a candy store…
We’d started a shared board on Pinterest about a month before we moved to come up with inspiration and it was clear that we were on the same wavelength when it came to design, layout, colours – everything! We have used greys and white as neutral tones with punchy pops of colour like mint, mustard, pink and lime in the accessories…
So today, I’m super excited to invite you to the first home tour and show you some photos of one of my favourite places to hang out – welcome to our living room!
Our living room has a balance of traditional features like high ceilings, massive bay windows, moulding and a fireplace. The room gets lots of natural light thanks to the large windows and we wanted to create a cheerful space to compliment that. We wanted to balance the old with the new, and have opted for a mid century modern-inspired interior – think atomic furniture, geometric design and fun (yet functional) pieces.
One of my favourite pieces is this Oliver Bonas table, which looks like a vintage suitcase. Too cute! We can keep it closed, or have it open and show off the retro map lining!
The built-in bookcase is another original feature that we love. We wanted to draw more attention to it and decided to line the back with some teal paper to really make the white shelving stand out. I can’t get enough of the end result, and might do the same idea with the one in the bedroom too.
Our 1950s-inspired sofa is upholstered in a soft charcoal and feels like a really good pair of jeans – comfy and stylish. One of the very first things I bought for the house is sitting in the middle – a Custard Cream cushion by the awesome Nikki McWilliams. I think the grey and yellow make a cute colour combo!
Being able to put up bright prints of the things that make us happy has been a real joy (we were never able to do that in rented flats!). You can expect pop culture references, retro Disney designs, fun slogans and alternative movie art all over our home (and yes, we have a Twin Peaks cushion on our armchair!).
We have a couple of flamingo-themed knick knacks dotted around the place, but how lovely is this pink lemonade-scented candle by Flamingo Candles at Hey Sailor? They stock a huge range of these ever-popular candles at Hey Sailor, but I wanted the living room to smell like one of my favourite drinks so choosing one was easy! I also adore the dinky jam jar shape.
Can we talk about this door for a moment?! We seen a super-easy tutorial online on how to create a striking door design and couldn’t wait to give it a go in our new pad. And with a paint colour called Miami Mint, however could you go wrong? It’s totally transformed an ordinary cupboard door and now feels like a statement all on its own.
Every visitor we’ve had so far has commented on our light fitting, which is a bright teal and copper shade. “It looks so expensive!“, they exclaim – but the truth? It’s from IKEA! The copper on the inside gives the room a warm glow too, perfect for cosy nights at this time of year.
While we were moving we picked up a lot of great finds at Debenhams, including our geometric polar bear magazine rack and retro-style coffee table. They go with the feel of our living space perfectly and I firmly believe you’re never too old to have a magazine rack shaped like an animal, don’t you?
Having a space to call our own and being able to express our personal style through our home feels AMAZING. Although I’m sure every room will continue to evolve, I am over the moon with the progress so far!
Thanks for hanging out in the living room with me today! I’ll be sharing more of the Rainbow Palace again in the future so be sure to come back and take in the rest of the tour!
With cacti, colours and cushions,
