Have you ever wanted to start something new but felt like you were holding back? Be honest, was it perfection that was holding you back - or at least, the idea of perfection?
Sometimes the hardest part of a new piece of work or project is simply getting started; and I reckon a lot of the time it’s because we put pressure on ourselves to to get every element just right before we move forward.
Doing your best is something I am a firm believer in (I’ve chatted about it here!), but I think there’s a huge difference between giving something 100% and this idea of perfection. Is it realistic or fair? If you ask me, perfection is a myth - our own self-made Frankenstein’s monster and one of our biggest blockers!
By holding ourselves to impossible standards, we risk not getting anything done. People often tell me that they want to start a website or a platform to support their business and, when I check in with them (usually over on Instagram!), they haven’t taken the leap yet because they want every single detail to be perfect. Even down to the font size! But, when you think about it, is that pressure really necessary?
Instead, we need to believe that what we can do, when we try really hard, is good enough. In fact, it’s more than good enough - it’s fantastic
Perfection isn’t real but YOU are! You, your talent, your ideas and your goals are all very real and valuable as they are. The less time we waste getting stuck in the comparison trap, the more time we can spend motivating ourselves to get things done and achieve what we really want!
Sometimes it’s easier said than done and I totally get it. Sometimes, when I feel stuck, I make two lists: one of the things I need to put in place before I start working on something new (AKA, the things that are necessary in order for it to work), and the other is my nice-to-have’s (the minor details that can also be refined later on if need be!). This really helps me put things into perspective and hop to it.
I hope that by talking about this today I might have helped in some small way - especially if you have been feeling kind of stuck lately. Remember, perfection is all in our heads and the real challenge is believing in what you’re already capable of doing… so get out there and NAIL IT already!
